Press Release: Senior Material (Europe) AB granted exemption for use of methylene chloride – supporting the European battery industry

Eskilstuna, 15 September 2025

The Swedish Chemicals Agency has granted Senior Material (Europe) AB an exemption for the use of methylene chloride in the production of base film for lithium-ion battery separators. The exemption is valid from 1 October 2025 until 30 September 2027 and covers up to 1,280 tons of methylene chloride.

“We welcome this decision. It allows us to start production in Eskilstuna and ensure deliveries of high-quality separator film to the European battery industry,” says Cecilia Vallin, Head of HR, Communication & PR.

The decision confirms that the company’s procedures for work environment and safety meet the requirements of the authorities. Following production start, Senior Material (Europe) AB will submit regular measurement results to the Swedish Chemicals Agency, to demonstrate transparency and responsibility.

“Safety and sustainability remain our top priorities. At the same time, we continue our work to develop and test alternatives to methylene chloride, with the aim of gradually reducing and eventually phasing out its use,” Cecilia Vallin adds.
